10 reasons to detox your home from plastic

By the Vove team, updated 14/08/2026

Under most kitchen sinks there is a tub of pods, a couple of spray bottles, a half-used jug and a bag of synthetic sponges. Very little of that needs to be plastic. Some of it also sheds plastic while it works, which is the part most people have never been told.

Below are ten reasons to change it, in the order they tend to matter. The first three are the problem, with the research named so you can go and read it yourself. The rest is what a replacement has to get right before it deserves your money.

1. The plastic is inside the products, not only the packaging

Most laundry and dishwasher pods are wrapped in a dissolvable film called PVA. It vanishes from view in the drum, which is not the same as vanishing. Melamine foam sponges, the white ones sold as erasers, wear away as you scrub: lab work published in Environmental Science and Technology in 2024 (Su, Xing, Ji et al.) measured around 6.5 million microplastic fibres released for every gram worn off. Denser sponges shed less, and that figure belongs to melamine erasers rather than every sponge in the drawer.

Then there is the chemistry you cannot read. The word fragrance on a cleaning label can legally stand in for dozens of undisclosed ingredients, and fragrance blends often carry phthalates so the scent lasts longer. National biomonitoring has detected phthalate breakdown products in the urine of most people tested (CDC NHANES, via the US EPA Report on the Environment). Detection means a lab could measure it, not that anyone is ill, and no single product is the cause.

2. The cupboard fills with plastic faster than anyone notices

Count what is under your sink. A tub of pods, two or three spray bottles, a jug of laundry liquid, a bottle of washing-up liquid, a hand soap pump and a bag of sponges. Nearly all of it is plastic that arrived full of water and gets thrown out once the water is gone.

Refills do not fix it, because most refills are another plastic bottle. Buying the same thing again is the default, so the cupboard resets to the same shape every few weeks. No single purchase feels wasteful, which is why the total goes unnoticed.

3. Most swaps do not survive the first month

Two things usually go wrong. The first is performance. A gentler product goes on a genuinely dirty load, the result is not good enough, and the old bottle is back in the cupboard the same week. That is where most low-tox brands lose people, and good intentions do not make up for a shirt that came out marked.

The second is a promise the swap cannot keep. University of Plymouth researchers found that a single six kilogram wash of synthetic fabric can release over 700,000 plastic microfibres (Napper and Thompson, Marine Pollution Bulletin, 2016). Those fibres come from the clothes, not the detergent, so changing detergent does not change them. Sold on the wrong promise, a swap gets abandoned as soon as you work that out.

4. One set covers the five jobs a home does most

The Home Detox covers laundry, the dishwasher, the toilet, washing-up and hand washing, which is most of what a household actually cleans with. It is the cupboard swapped in one go rather than one product at a time.

In the box: a laundry tablet starter set (40 tablets and a tin), dishwasher tablets (40 tablets and a tin), probiotic toilet tablets (12 tablets and a tin), dish soap as a refillable glass bottle with three powder refills, hand soap the same way, and a bamboo dish brush with three swap-in heads plus four loofah sponges. Nothing in it needs a plastic bottle to arrive, and nothing needs one to be refilled.

5. It cleans, which is where most gentle products fall down

The laundry and dishwasher tablets run on enzymes (protease, amylase, lipase and cellulase) with oxygen bleach from sodium percarbonate, plus TAED so that oxygen still activates in a cool wash. One tablet goes straight into the drum on any cycle, cold included. The dishwasher takes one in the dispenser with no pre-rinsing.

The dish and hand soaps arrive as powder you mix into the glass bottle, so you are not paying to ship water and the soap is made up fresh. The standard we hold the set to is that it cleans like the supermarket bottles it replaces, not almost.

6. The packaging is plastic-free, and refills keep it that way

The tablets come in FSC-certified kraft pouches and tip into a tin you keep for good. The soaps come as kraft sachets of powder that you mix into a glass bottle with a pump. Refills ship flat and light, so the tin and the bottle are bought once and topped up after that.

The tablets are made without PVA, so no dissolvable film goes down the drain from the tablet itself, and without microplastics. Every formula in the set is biodegradable and septic-safe.

7. Buying it as a set costs less than buying the pieces

Bought separately this is six purchases: laundry tablets, dishwasher tablets, toilet tablets, a dish soap starter, a hand soap starter, and the brush with its sponges. Add those up at their own prices and the total comes to more than the set. The struck-through price on the offer band is that sum of the separate items, not a number we invented.

After the first order the sums change again, because you are buying refills rather than bottles. The tin, the glass and the brush handle stay where they are.

8. You can leave it out on the counter

The soaps come in a smoked glass bottle with a pump, in light or dark, chosen when you order. The tablets live in a plain tin. Both are built to sit by the sink rather than be pushed to the back of a cupboard.

The design earns its keep there. What you leave out gets used, and what ends up behind the bin gets forgotten, then replaced by whatever is easiest to reach.

9. The free-from list is specific, and it is public

Across the set we leave out PVA, microplastics, phosphates, chlorine bleach, synthetic fragrance, parabens, phthalates, alcohol ethoxylates, PFAS and PFOS. They are named one by one because a vague promise is easy to make and impossible to check.

We will not tell you a formula is free of all chemicals, because water is one and so is everything else in the tin. What we can tell you is which ingredients we leave out and what the rest are for: every item in the set carries its full ingredient list on its own product page, with a line on what each one does.

10. The whole switch turns up in one box

It arrives as one delivery, so the change happens in an afternoon instead of across six separate orders that each need thinking about. Half-fill each glass bottle with warm water, tip in a powder sachet, top it up and shake, then leave it an hour or two to gel. Tip the tablets into their tins.

That is the setup done. From then on it is one tablet in the drum, one in the dishwasher tray, one in the bowl and a pump of soap at the sink. The set ships free in the US.

What people say about the parts of the set

One tablet does a big load, not messy, and the short ingredient list suits sensitive skin.

Teresa M., on the laundry tablets

Switched to cut plastic and they work great. No pre-rinse, dishes clean and streak-free.

Sarah K., on the dishwasher tablets

I love these tablets. They clean the bowl better than any liquid cleaner I have used.

Carla R., on the toilet tablets

Cleanest ingredient list I have seen, and really concentrated. A few drops cut the grease.

Tom S., on the dish soap

Add powder to warm water, shake, and it gels. Smells of cedar and geranium, hands softer.

Jenna L., on the hand soap
